Makaua produce beautiful handmade products in Mexico from local palm leaves in a technique which has been passed on over numerous generations. The word Makaua in the ancient Náhuatl language has two meanings: “from hand to hand” or “the act of giving a hand”. Makaua don’t have a factory, the artisans all work from home and send their products to the warehouse in Mexico City. Each artisan is paid directly for every piece they make. Prices are set by them, taking into consideration the quantity of material used and difficulty level.

THE PEOPLE
The artisans who make the products live in one of the most vulnerable and poorest areas of Mexico. Working as a part of the Makaua team, gives people the option of earning a steady and dignified income. The last 18+ years of sustained income, have also had a substantial impact on the quality of life of the people who are part of this beautiful story, and who are able to work in their own homes and communities. The goal is to keep being able to work together and to offer them this option for many years to come. In Makaua, we recognize and value each and every hand that has made and makes this story possible.

PALM AND SUSTAINABILITY
Palm grows abundantly in the Southern mountains of Mexico. The local population has made use of this natural fiber for hundreds of years. People go up to the mountains and carefully cut specially selected leaves that are ready for harvest, they do not kill the plants and allow them to continue to grow so the cycle can begin all over again.
